Climb the 41.8m-tall Kannon statue's interior stairs

About this spot

Standing 41.8m tall atop Kannonyama Hill, the Byakue Dai-Kannon (白衣大観音) is Takasaki's symbol. On the interior tour, you can climb a 9-story staircase up to shoulder height, with windows offering panoramic views of the Takasaki cityscape and the Joumou Sanzan (上毛三山) mountains. The approach is lined with souvenir shops and tea houses, making a stroll while snacking on grilled manju or dango a fun detour.

Tips

The interior is stairs-only, so strollers are not allowed - leave yours at the entrance and use a baby carrier instead. It's also handy to grab a light lunch at a tea house along the approach.

Best time to visit

Allow 45-60 minutes. The approach gets busy around midday on weekends and holidays.
