Pay respects at Shotendo on the cliff, walk the cool temple path

About this spot

A historic temple clinging to the cliffs of Ikoma Mountain's mid-slope, with the main hall and pagoda dramatically stacked along the steep face. Known affectionately as "Shotendo," it is revered for business prosperity and household safety. Since its establishment in the Edo period, this temple has attracted many pilgrims, with numerous lanterns and buildings arranged in layers along the slope. The temple path is lined with towering cedar trees, keeping it cool and pleasant to walk even in summer. The Hozan-ji cable car station is nearby, making it easy even for families who aren't fond of mountain hiking. From within the temple grounds, you can enjoy views overlooking the town of Ikoma—a fresh and rejuvenating start to your day.
