Cross Bentenbashi Bridge to Enoshima - pay respects at a historic shrine

A historic shrine on the slopes of Enoshima Island, comprised of three sections: Hetsutomiya, Nakatsutomiya, and Okutsuomiya. Known since the Edo period as a shrine dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten (deity of good fortune), the shrine approach is lined with torii gates and statues. As you climb the stairs, you encounter shrines with distinctly different architectural styles. From the grounds, you can also enjoy views overlooking Sagami Bay, and experience the charm unique to Enoshima while paying your respects. The tree-lined approach offers a pleasant coolness during the strong summer heat.

片瀬の地域に根づく諏訪神社の例大祭は、8月23日から28日までの6日間にわたって行われる夏の一大行事です。この日は祭りの初日にあたり、境内や参道には提灯が飾られ、これから始まる賑わいの始まりを感じられます。神輿の巡行など地域を挙げた行事は会期を通じて行われ、片瀬の街全体が夏祭りの空気に包まれます。屋台の出店は会期後半の8月26日・27日の2日間に予定されているため、初日は境内の雰囲気や地元の人々の準備の様子を静かに楽しむのがこの日らしい過ごし方です。
Tips
屋台が出るのは8/26・27のみのため、この日の夕食は事前に江の島周辺で済ませておきましょう。境内は夜になると参拝客で混み合うことがあるため、小さなお子さん連れははぐれないよう気をつけて。会期中の詳しい日程は神社や地域の掲示で確認するのが確実です。

It's about a 10-minute walk from Bentenbashi Bridge to the shrine approach entrance, then more stairs lead to Hetsutomiya. Using the Escar (a paid outdoor escalator) makes the uphill easier, so it's especially recommended for families with small children.
