Ishiyama-dera Temple (石山寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This ancient temple stands beside the Seta River in Otsu City and is known for its distinctive scenery, with temple buildings built atop an exposed outcrop of wollastonite rock - the temple's name itself derives from this stone. Its two-story pagoda, said to be Japan's oldest, stands quietly amid green trees with graceful proportions. Murasaki Shikibu is said to have gotten her inspiration for The Tale of Genji here, and the temple has long been cherished for its literary associations. The grounds are hilly but well shaded, which is a relief for walking even on a midsummer morning. With the afternoon pool ahead, it's a good balance to focus on visiting just the main halls.

Tips

Check the official website for entry hours and admission fees. The grounds have stone steps and slopes throughout, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Strollers can be hard to push in some sections, so a baby carrier is reassuring. Mosquitoes appear in summer, so insect repellent helps. It's within walking distance of Keihan Ishiyamadera Station.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 20 minutes. Early morning, when there are fewer visitors, is quiet.
