About a 7-minute walk from Hase Station, Kotoku-in is famous for the Kamakura Great Buddha, a National Treasure. The seated Amida Nyorai statue, about 11 meters tall, is overwhelmingly impressive when viewed up close. For an extra fee, you can even go inside the statue, giving kids an exploring adventure feel. The approach to the temple is lined with street food stalls and souvenir shops, making the walk there and back enjoyable too.
Tips
The stairs for viewing the inside of the statue are steep, so a baby carrier is reassuring for small children. The temple grounds are flat and stroller-friendly. The approach from Hase Station tends to be crowded, so hold your child's hand while walking.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour; mornings right after opening are less crowded.
