Journey Through Time in Thatched-Roof Traditional Houses

About this spot

An open-air museum featuring 25 buildings relocated from the Edo period, including Gassho-zukuri (steep-thatched-roof) structures. From hearth fires being lit to volunteer storytellers sharing folklore, you can experience the everyday life you've read about in textbooks with all five senses. The grounds surrounded by greenery are a pleasure to walk through, and a rest stop at the Gassho-style soba restaurant "Shirakawa-go" is a specialty.

Tips

The pathways have many slopes and gravel roads, so a baby carrier may be more practical than a stroller. Hearth experiences and old-fashioned play activities are hugely popular with children, so plan for extra time.

Best time to visit

Allow 1 hour; early after opening and after 3 p.m. are quieter times.
